Residents of Kasungu through Hoho Action Plus have mobilised funds and resources to donate to 388 households affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy at four evacuation camps in Mangochi.

Speaking in interview on Tuesday, Hoho Action Plus executive director Noah Nhlane said they raised the resources in three days.

 which has raised K900 000 and a seven-tonne of consumables, blankets, clothes and shoes,” he said.

Nhlane also thanked Kasungu District Hospital and World Vision Malawi for providing a vehicle and fuel for a lorry which will ferry the resources to Mangochi.

In a separate interview, Department of Disaster and Management Affairs (Dodma) spokesperson Chipiliro Khamula thanked the organisation and the residents for the gesture. “I thank the people of Kasungu on behalf of Dodma that they felt the need to help our friends who have been affected and displaced by Cyclone Freddy. As Malawians, we need to join hands and offer the survivors support,” he said.

The relief items will benefit survivors at Nsakala, Itimu, Malombe and Likulungwa evacuation camps.

Cyclone Freddy has displaced 553 614 people in the Southern Region. As of Tuesday, the death toll stood at 507
