Lifestyle and charity group Land Rover Club Lilongwe Chapter has donated assorted items to inmates at Maula Prison.
Speaking on Friday during the event, the club’s treasurer Elywin Kambani said as a social club, they wanted to help the inmates after appreciating their challenges in maintaining personal hygiene.
“One of our members visited a relative at the facility and he shared what many inmates were going through. We, therefore, decided to mobilise resources to reach out to them,” he said.

Kambani said from what they saw during the visit, the inmates require a lot of assistance to help their reformation process and said the public can play a big role in facilitating that process.
Maula Prison station officer Peter Kalagho said it was pleasing that organisations such as the Land Rover Club consider the plight of prisoners.
“Many people look at prison as a place which does not deserve any assistance compared to hospitals where we go when sick. But in life, we all flirt between being a free person and a prisoner,” he said.
Kalagho said the allocation they get from the government is insufficient to meet their needs, adding that they rely on the goodwill of other organisations.
Unlike in the past, prisons are regarded as reformatory centres where inmates go through rehabilation process to prepare for their integration into society once they finish their sentences.
The items included clothes and soap.
Maula Prison is keeping 3 544 inmates.
