Police in Chikwawa are keeping in custody a couple for allegedly stealing a 7 days old baby.

Spokesperson for Chikwawa police, Dickson Matemba has identified the suspects as Mavuto Smart and Eliza Thendo

Matemba said that on March 7, 2023 at Million Village in the boundary of Chikwawa and Nsanje Districts whereby a mother of the baby was taking bath and left the baby in the house, when she returned she discovered that the baby was missing which prompted her to inform her husband who was at the garden and reported the matter to Thendo Police Unit.

Police officers instituted investigations which led to the arrest of Mavuto Smart and his wife Eliza Thendo who was holding the baby and after being questioned by the law enforcers she mentioned that the baby was brought to her by her husband.

The duo suspects will soon appear before court n where they are going to answer a charge of child stealing which is contrary to section 167 of the penal code.

Meanwhile Police has returned the biological mother and advise all parent in the districts to take much care of their children to avoid such incidence.

Mavuto Smart is 33 years old hails from Million Village in the area of Traditional Authority Tengani in Nsanje District and Eliza Thendo is 20 years old hails from Thendo Village, Traditional Authority Masache in Chikwawa District.
