FND takes on Attorney General on MK750 million AIP scandal

Forum for National Development (FND) has written the Attorney General (AG) Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda asking for evidence of the refund of the $750 million which the Ministry of Agriculture is said to have paid a foreign company in the botched fertiliser purchase deal.

In a letter signed by its national coordinator Fryson Chodzi, FND says Nyirenda should resign from his post if he fails to provide the proof within seven days.

FND says it is surprising that the AG has not addressed the nation on the progress made to recover the money even though he travelled to Germany where he stayed for two weeks claiming that he was following up the money which he said was frozen in a bank there.

It further says bank documents in its possession show that the first part of the said refund which amounts to $181 250 did not come from a foreign bank account but was sourced locally and deposited into a Smallholder Farmers Fertiliser Revolving Fund of Malawi account.

Reads the letter in part: “We demand of you sir to make good of your promise otherwise we question your prudence and integrity to travel to Germany for two weeks wasting more tax payers money while well aware that there is no money to recover.”

The group has also copied ACB in the letter asking the graft busting body to investigate the matter.
