Zambian Businessman Attacked and Robbed of K80,000

A Mufulira businessman, Badani Mbewe, was attacked and robbed by seven armed criminals outside his home on January 30, 2023. The criminals made off with K80,000 in cash, a mobile phone worth K150, and a wristwatch worth K65. The incident occurred at around 20:40 hours.

According to Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba, the victim had withdrawn the money from the bank for his workers’ salaries. He had passed through a local hotel to check on his business before heading home with the money. The money was kept in a bag under the driver’s seat of his Nissan hard body vehicle.

Upon arriving home, Mr. Mbewe was greeted by seven unknown criminals who attacked his security guard and hit him with a crowbar, causing a deep cut. The criminals then pointed a pistol at Mr. Mbewe’s head and searched his vehicle, taking the bag containing the cash, his phone, and wristwatch.

The matter was reported to the police, but Mr. Mbewe was unable to give a statement immediately as his blood pressure had risen. Both he and his security guard were taken to the hospital for treatment. A docket was opened, but no arrests have been made so far.

The police are investigating the incident and urge anyone with information to come forward. This act of violence serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious and vigilant in handling large sums of money.
