Woman Dies in Machinga After Giving Birth at Home, Despite Nurse’s Offer for Medical Care

Eunice Pambiche, a 30-year-old woman, died yesterday in Machinga after giving birth to twins at home, despite being offered a chance to wait in a labour ward when her time was due.

The incident took place at the Mpiri Health Center, where the in-charge, Susan Ndhlovu, confirmed the death.

Senior Chief Nkoola of the district expressed concern over the continued maternal deaths in his area, citing negligence and delays in seeking maternal health care as the main causes.

In response to this, Health expert Mphatso Ngulube Chikhwaza has called on chiefs and other stakeholders to raise awareness on the importance of timely seeking healthcare and to end the belief in using traditional birth attendants.
