The Mkukula First Grade Magistrate Court in Dowa has fined a British National man K720, 000 for causing death and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.
The man has been identified as Allie Mussa aged 22.
According to Kanengo Police Spokesperson Gresham Ngwira, prosecutor Evance Kamtukule informed the court that Allie was driving his Toyota Hilux pick-up truck on January 1 towards Kanengo from Salima direction around 08:30AM.
“Upon arrival at Cargomate, he lost control of the vehicle due to speeding and hit an oncoming motor cyclist on the offside lane who had two pillion passengers.
“The court further heard that due to the impact, the rider and one pillion passenger, sustained severe head injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Daeyang Luke Hospital,” Ngwira said.
Ngwira added that Mussa asked for lenience, pleaded guilty and apologized for the incident.
First Grade Magistrate Thomson Midias then ordered Mussa to pay K560, 000 for the first count or in default, serve a two-year jail term and pay a K160, 000 fine for the second count or in default serve a 15-month jail sentence.
Mussa has since paid the fines and the court has ordered K500, 000 to go to bereaved family as compensation.
