Villagers Damage Fertilizer Warehouse in Protest of Affordable Inputs Program in Mchinji

Angry villagers in Traditional Authority Kawere in Mchinji have damaged a fertilizer warehouse and suspended the sale of Affordable Inputs Program (AIP) fertilizer.

The incident occurred yesterday afternoon at the Chawala selling point, where the Councilor’s car was also damaged.

Councilor for the area, White Musha, said the incident happened when the responsible officers were trying to help the elderly, who were unable to stand in queues, to access the commodity.

According to Musha, they are currently consulting relevant bodies to consider reopening the market, as most farmers have yet to access the commodity.

Mchinji police spokesperson, Limbani Mpinganjira, said they have launched a manhunt for those suspected of inciting the violence.
