National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust in Mangochi District says lack of coordination among key stakeholders is affecting the implementation of various development projects.
Mangochi Nice Truct civic education officer Joseph Chamambala said this on Tuesday after meeting Senior Chief Chimwala’s Area Development Committee (ADC) members, councillors, chiefs, council officials and other key stakeholders that facilitate development.
The meeting followed the trust’s public expenditure tracking exercise carried out two years ago to assess people’s knowledge on various projects being implemented in the area using District Development Fund and Constituency Development Fund.
Chamambala observed that development is failing to take place in most areas in the district because there is no coordination among ADC members, chiefs, councillors, members of Parliament, council officials and other key players.
He said: “We have observed that the ADC members have plans, but their plans are not implemented.
“Instead, the council makes its own plans and go to the communities to implement those projects, resulting in implemention projects that are not necessary.”
Chamambala decried lack of involvement of ADC members in various projects by the duty-bearers, saying the development is leading to the implementation of sub-standard projects.
In his remarks, Mangochi District Council economist Blessings Stovu described the meeting as critical, saying it outlined the problems affecting development in the district.
“This meeting is important because it is one way of building the capacity of local structures and goes in sync with Malawi 2063,” he said.
Nkungulu ward councillor Martin Milanzi pledged to coordinate and involve the ADC members in various projects.
The area’s ADC chairperson Janet Hasani commended Nice Trust for empowering them on public expenditure tracking.
