Police in Salima are keeping in custody a 49-year-old man on suspicion that he defiled a three-year-old girl.
The suspect, who is a brother-in-law to the victim’s mother, allegedly defiled the girl on November 22. The victim reportedly went to the suspect’s house to eat leftover food from the previous day.

Salima Police spokesperson Jacob Khembo said the victim’s mother followed the pair to the suspect’s house after noting that they had taken too long to return.
The mother told the police that she found the door locked.
The suspect reportedly offered the child K100 to conceal the incident, but the victim told her mother that she had been defiled.
Police referred the child to Salima District Hospital where a medical examination confirmed the defilement.
The suspect from Namizi Village in Traditional Authority Maganga in the District will appear in court to answer the charge of defilement contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.
