Lilongwe-based non-governmental organisation, Tigwirane Manja, recently organised a three-week football and netball bonanza aimed at keeping youths busy to refrain from engaging in bad behaviour such as prostitution, alcoholism and smoking.
The initiative, which targeted youths in and around Chilinde Township, saw the organisation mentoring youths on how to be become responsible citizens.
During the K1 million bonanza finals in Chilinde Township on Sunday, the organisation’s executive director said: “The first objective of the tournament is to bring together the youths so that they should stop indulging in bad behaviours.
“The second is to commemorate 25 years of Chilinde Health Centre existence and the third is to expose the talent in these areas so they can be scouted by established clubs.”
On his part, Malawi Olympic Committee technical commission member Isaac Phiri hailed the organisation for the initiative, saying it will help in development of sports.
He said: “We are aware that due to the economic circumstances, it is very difficult for one to be sponsoring sports games. So, we commend TigwiraneManja for this initiative. We believe other people will be inspired.”
During the finals, Villa FC emerged champions in football after beating Ambassadors FC 2-1 while Chilinde Queens beat Belinda Queens 8-7 in netball.
