Man supplies piped water to communities

Businessperson Lloyd Ndalamira Nkhoma has supplied free piped-water to communities of Lufeyo Village, Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District to improve water access in the wake of cholera outbreak.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, he said he taps underground water from his compound using solar energy.

Said Nkhoma: “People of Mvera and surrounding areas are struggling to access clean water, which is exposing them to cholera and other waterborne diseases.

“I constructed a solar-powered water pumping system for my family and for business. But after noticing challenges fellow community members are facing, I decided to channel the water to them as well.”

Village head Lufeyo commended Nkhoma for the initiative, saying people had no access to clean water.

“We are pleased with Mr. Nkhoma’s generosity. May God bless him with more resources to extend the same to other areas,” he said.

Dowa is one of the districts in the Central Region which continues to register high numbers of cholera cases.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has attributed the cholera outbreak to low access to clean water, open defaecation and poor personal hygiene.

As of Wednesday, Dowa had registered 594 cholera cases and 20 deaths.

Since the outbreak was reported in March last year, the country has so far registered 19 141 cholera cases and 643 deaths.
