MERA to conduct public hearing on electricity price hike

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has revealed the plans to conduct public hearings on proposed hike in electricity price between the month of January and February 2023.

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) last year proposed a 99 percent electricity tariff hike which awaits MERA’s approval.

The increase covering four year period would mean tariffs being raised by K187.98 per kWh, a hike from the current K104 per kWh if approved.

Chief Executive Officer for MERA, Henry Kachaje said they are planning to get views from Malawians on the proposed tariff and they are hopeful that the process would be completed by next month February.

Mark Botomani Chairperson of the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said MERA should take time on the process to make sure that a larger number of people is consulted.
