Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has described President Lazarus Chakwera’s New Year Address as a lost opportunity and portrayed his lack of direction and decisive leadership.
DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba said in a statement that the President’s failure to address challenges facing Malawians reflected his disregard for their suffering.
Namalomba: We are appalled by this lack of action
Reads the statement in part: “The DPP, just as the entire nation at large, is appalled by this lack of decisive action at the time this country needs action. The nation is appalled by the lack of direction at the time when the health sector is in a crisis and AIP [Affordable Inputs Programme] keeps on eluding the intended beneficiaries.
“The nation is standing face to face with hunger and in the midst of such a threat, the man at the steering wheel of the country, can at best continue his usual mediocre leadership style of talking.”
The DPP has also accused the Tonse Alliance of establishing commissions of inquiry and other presidential guiding bodies, that are a replication of other bodies already on the ground.
But Minister of Information and Digitisation Gospel Kazako in an interview with The Nation on Monday said the DPP has no moral ground to criticise the government for failing Malawians.
He said the government will not spend its energy responding to “cheap propaganda” from the same people that allegedly messed up the country.
Kazako, who is the official government spokesperson, said: “They [DPP] have no moral ground to say anything. This country is under reconstruction due to the damage and mess that they created.”
