Police in Blantyre are hunting for a criminal who stole a two weeks old baby on December 16 at Quarry location in the commercial city, Malawi News Agency (Mana) has learnt.
Blantyre Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Aubrey Singanyama identified the stolen baby as Gift Mauluka from Nyalugwe Village in Traditional Authority Kadewere in Chiradzulu District.
“Reports indicate that on December 16, 2022 at around 3pm the baby’s mother went to the market leaving behind the child with his grandmother and after a short while the child started crying and the granny sent a nine-year-old girl, with the baby strapped at her back to search for the child’s mother at the market.
“The girl failed to trace the child’s mother, on her return she met an unknown woman who tricked her that she knows the toddler’s mother whereabouts and the unsuspecting little girl surrendered the child to her,” said Singanyama.
Singanyama said that upon reaching home the granny quizzed of the whereabouts of the child and when the girl narrated the whole story, the grandmother reported the matter to Soche Police Station where investigations have been instituted to trace the culprit.
