Court slashes downward compensation for women and girls raped in Msundwe, Mbwatalika

High Court judge Justice Kenyatta Nyirenda has slashed from K255,684,112.00 to K70,895,618.21 the legal fees to be paid to lawyers who represented women and girls from Msundwe and Mbwatalika in Lilongwe who were in 2018, raped by some police officers deployed to the area to quell tension.

In his ruling, the Judge said, the K255.6 million sum was unreasonable.

Attornery General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda who disputed the initial costs said, he is satisfied with the ruling as tax payers money has been saved.

“I am satisfied with the ruling as taxpayers money has been saved. This is what I aimed to achieve in this case,” he said.

WLA offered pro-bono services in the case, but later charged the state K255 million after the High Court ordered it to pay costs on top of awarding the women a total of K130 million.
