Heavy rains, strong winds wreck havoc in Thyolo and Ntchisi district

Several families in Ntchisi and Thyolo have been left homeless following the damage caused by strong winds and heavy rains early December.

The district’s relief and rehabilitation officer of Thyolo, Faith Khamula said 325 households have been affected this weekend while 229 were hit a week ago in the areas of Traditional Authories Thukuta, Bvumbwe, Kapichi Ngolongoliwa and Nchiramwera.

According to Khamula, seven people have been injured including two deaths of lightning strike. She says an evacuation camp has since been opened at Thangadzuwa primary school housing 10 families.

Group Village Headman Kapichi whose house has also been damaged sounded an SOS for the displaced families.

Village headman Kabenu of Ntchisi district has since expressed worry with the development saying it has greatly affected his subjects as they have nowhere to put up at the moment.

Kabenu said the development has brought down power lines and has not spared learning institutions such as Msambaimfa Full Primary School in the area where houses for two teachers have also been blown off.

Kabenu has called for urgent support from authorities.
