Men urged to cry when facing problems

Saint John of God Hospital Services Mental Health Officer and Psychotherapist, Mark Chalamanda has urged men to be crying if they have problems worthy crying unlike committing suicide.

He made his remarks yesterday in Lilongwe during Government Citizen Engagement (Pabwalo) on mental health crisis, electricity situation and vandalism which was organized by the Ministry of National Unity.

Chalamanda said men are most victims to suicide because they do not voice out their concerns.

He also added that the Government should invest more programs about mental health and engage more mental health experts to deal with mental health issues in the country.

Minister of Civic Education and National Unity, Timothy Mtambo said his ministry will make it possible to engage the public on various issues including mental health.

“We will make sure that the citizens are engaged so that they can understand the issues affecting our country, because we have seen that cases of suicide have become fashionable in the country,” said Mtambo.

“The public will be engaged for them to understand that the right to life is sacred and it is protected, and mental health experts will also be recruited to change the minds of the public,” he added.

He also said his ministry is planning to engage community radio stations and related media outlets in the country to support in sensitizing the public including those in rural areas on the issues concerning mental health.
