Three people arrested for defaming Prophet Shepherd Bushiri

Three people have been arrested for defaming Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Jesus National Church.

Bushiri’s Public Relations Officer Ephraim Nyondo has confirmed of the development in a statement posted on his official facebook page.

According to Nyondo, the three are currently on bail.

“Few days ago, I posted a stern warning targeting people who use social media to spread fake stories against Prophet Shepherd Bushiri. I made it very clear that Prophet Bushiri will no longer sit idle, watching his name being destroyed.

“Well, it appears some people still thought the Prophet, because he is a man of God, cant take up legitimate means to protect himself,” wrote Nyondo.

He added: “Last week, social media was awash with fake stories against Prophet Bushiri, published by Facebook group called Malawi News Online. The Prophet was left without an option but to report the matter to Malawi Police Service (MPS).

“The Police did their investigations that led to the arrest of three people, led by a guy called Aubrey Alfonso. Alfonso and the three were charged with defamation of character, extortion and cyber stalking. They are currently on police bail.

“Though I understand that the three suspects admitted to have been writing damaging articles and eventually sought forgiveness from the Prophet, as a country we need to stand up against people who destroy other people’s reputation.

“We cant continue this route and I am happy that police is taking these matters seriously. We need to stand up against defamation, cyber stalking and extortion. “

Nyondo has since warned Malawians to desist from spreading fake stories against Prophet Bushiri.

“To those still writing and spreading fake stories against Prophet Bushiri, my message is clear: THE LONG ARM OF THE LAW WILL CATCH UP WITH YOU,” added Nyondo.
