White Ribbon Alliance board chairperson Karl Chokotho has commended community members from Traditional Authority (T/A) Dambe in Mchinji District for constructing a health post and eight houses for healthcare workers.
The health post is expected to provide services such as immunisation for under-five children, antenatal, family planning and vaccination.
Speaking on Sunday during a primary health open day in the area, Chokotho said they were impressed with what the communities achieved.

“As an organisation which deals with safe motherhood and reproductive health issues,we are happy to see that pregnant women and mothers will access healthcare services within their reach,” he said.
Mchinji district director of health and social services Juliana Kanyengambeta said the houses will ensure that healthcare workers live close to communities.
She hailed the good relationship that exists between healthcare workers and communities, saying it has improved primary healthcare delivery in the district.
“When healthcare workers live close to communities, people easily access healthcare services, but when healthcare workers live outside their catchment areas, people struggle to get services,” said Kanyengambeta.
She, therefore, commended the people for the initiative, saying it will reduce infant mortality as sick children will get assistance within reach.
Senior Chief Dambe praised his people for their effort and cooperation to construct the health facility and houses.
He attributed the achievement to a good relationship among traditional leaders and community members in his area.
The chief said community members contributed money to buy materials for the health post and eight houses.
“This area has no public hospital. Sick people go to Kapiri Mission Hospital. So, the health post will enable people access primary healthcare services within reach,” said Dambe.
