Thyolo councillors seal directors’ offices

Thyolo District Council councillors on Tuesday sealed the offices of the director of planning and development (DPD) Morson Magombo and director of public works Amos Lisimba, alleging that they are unprofessional.

In an interview after sealing the offices, the council’s vice-chairperson Hudson Ovira said the two directors were making councillors fail to discharge their duties.

“The DPD is the centre of development but since January, wards are yet to get District Development Fund, yet the council is funded every month for implementation of projects,” he said.

Ovira added that the trend is also the same with Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) projects which the council already got K400 million as the first tranche, but nothing is being done.

“Gesd project is a performance-based funding which if we don’t perform, we will be left out next year. These two officers are not concerned at all as they are rarely in office to work for our people,” he said.

Ovira said they want the two officers out of Thyolo District Council immediately.

In a separate interview, Thyolo district commissioner Dauglas Moffati said he will have a dialogue with the councillors to address their grievances.
