Council snubs athletics body on meeting

Malawi National Council of Sports has snubbed the beleaguered Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) interim executive committee on its planned elective Extraordinary Annual General Meeting scheduled for December 17.

The council’s decision comes in the wake of World Athletics’ recent intervention that the local umbrella body has no powers to dissolve the AAM executive committee.

In an interview yesterday, Sports Council spokesperson Edgar Ntulumbwa said they have received communication from AAM, seeking their blessing on the planned meeting.

Ntulumbwa: We have nothing to do with that

He said: “Our position that we do not recognise them has not changed and we are not moving an inch backwards. Why should we be involved in an activity planned by a body that does not exist?

“As earlier stated, the AAM executive committee’s  tenure of office expired and we set up an interim body which was also dissolved and a caretaker committee was put in place.

“If they want to proceed, so be it, but we have absolutely nothing to do with that neither do we want to be seen as if we are in conflict with them.”

The ousted AAM interim executive committee’s  general secretary Frank Chitembeya yesterday said they will not comment on Sports Council’s recent stand.

He said: “I think we all know what has transpired in recent times. So, for now let’s leave it there.”

Chitembeya, however, insisted that they are still planning to have the meeting on the planned date as per their roadmap.

Sports Council dissolved the interim AAM executive  committee for failing to finalise the process for the amendment of the constitution and holding elections, a decision that led to the interim AAM leadership seeking the world athletics body’s intervention.
