Rumphi Police Station officer-in-charge Pherson Nthenda has asked duty-bearers to construct decent houses for officers to be deployed to Livingstionia Police Unit.

He said this on Wednesday when Rumphi District Council handed over newly built Livingstonia Police Unit to communities in Traditional Authority Kachulu in the district.

“For us to be effective, there are number of issues that have to be looked into. They include working relationship with communities, good facilities and shelter for officers,” he said.

Rumphi District Council chairperson Gilbert Kasambara said the new police unit will help fight illegal immigration.

He said he will engage Rumphi North parliamentarian Jappie Mhango of Democratic Progressive Party, area development committees and fellow councillors to construct one house at the police unit using Constituency Development Fund.

“The district council is also planning to construct another house for police officers in the 2023/24 financial year. I will also lobby non-governmental organisations who can help to assist with construction of police officers houses,” said Kasambara.

The police unit, which has two holding cells and offices, is expected to become operational once accommodation for officers is identified.

The council constructed the unit with funding from Governance to Enable Service Delivery project funded by the World Bank
