Parliamentary committee commends Gesd project

The Joint Parliamentary Committee on Local Authorities and Finance has expressed satisfaction with the progress of Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) projects being implemented in Mwanza District.

Speaking on Saturday after the committee toured Umodzi Community-Based Childcare Centre (CBCC) in Traditional Authority Nthache, the committee’s chairperson Gladys Ganda advised the council not to delay in handing over projects.

“The implementation shows the good coordination among various stakeholders in the district,” she said.

Mwanza district commissioner Malango Botomani said they put education as a priority among projects under Gesd.

“We want to promote education from the grass root level,” she said.

Gesd project coordinator Charles Chunga said he was impressed that councils were doing well in implementing the programme in its first year.

“However, heavy rains and delays in procuring materials affected projects in some councils,” he said.

Traditional Authority Nthache commended government for the Gesd initiative, saying councils are now able to implement projects to improve service delivery.

Gesd project is being implemented in some district councils by Malawi Government in collaboration with the National Local Government Finance Committee with funding from the World Bank.
