Macra cautions people against vandalism

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) communications manager Zadziko Mankhambo has cautioned people in Karonga District against vandalising public property.

He made the call on Monday during an awareness campaign at Karonga Boma for the installation of signposts, numbering of roads, streets and houses for the National Addressing System (NAS) that Macra is set to roll out in the country.

Mankhambo said: “Macra will install sign posts in the district’s roads and streets and number houses.

“The numbering will facilitate effective response to emergency services from ambulances, the police, fire fighters and even courier and transporters.”

Mankhambo asked people to own the project and refrain from vandalism, saying it is expensive to replace the materials.

Karonga District Council administration manager Martin Mkandawire said they will provide technical support to Macra.

“We will engage communities to own the project because at the end of the day, it will benefit them. So, we will continue raising awareness on the project,” he said.

One of the participants, Abigail Kumwenda from Baka, commended Macra for the awareness campaign.

“I will relay the information to my colleagues who were not part of the awareness campaign,” she said.

Malawi is implementing NAS which seeks to identify all areas in the country using the physical address format. Through NAS, all districts and traditional authorities will have postcodes.
