Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) plans to start registration of phones from January next year as one way of countering mobile money fraud.

The authority has said processes to acquire a Central Equipment Identification Registry are at an advanced stage which will be used for the exercise.

Macra Director General Daud Suleman in an interview said through the system, they will also be able to block stolen and fake phones.
