Man Dies In Lilongwe Road Accident

Unknown African male driver has died after the vehicle he was driving was hit by an on-coming motor vehicle at Msandula area in Lumbadzi on the evening of Monday, August 15.

Lumbadzi Police Spokesperson Felix Kwinyani said the accident involved three motor vehicles which are two Mercedes Benz lorries and a Probox saloon.

Kwinyani said: “Facts are that the Mercedes Benz lorry loaded with bags of maize, registration number DA 9373 which was being driven by Aliton Banda 33, of Mponera1 village, Traditional Authority Mponera in Dowa district was coming from the direction of Lumbadzi heading towards Kanengo along the Lilongwe – Kasungu M1 road wanted to over-take  a stationary motorvehicle registration number KK 4360 Mercedes Benz lorry which was being driven by Haswel Shonga of Moya village, Traditional authority Nsakambewa in Dowa district heading the same direction.

“Upon arrival at Msandula water board tanks near Central poultry feeds Banda’s motor vehicle hit behind the stationary motor vehicle due to overspeeding as he failed to control the vehicle which swerved to offside of the road where it collided with a Probox saloon registration number BX 644 which was driven by unknown driver (now deceased) with one passenger on board coming from the opposite direction.”

He added that Lumbadzi Police Station traffic team rushed to the scene and took the victims to Blessings Private hospital where death of the unknown driver of Probox saloon was pronounced upon arrival as he sustained multiple head injuries whilst the unknown passenger escaped with minor bruises on the head and both legs.

The dead body is being kept at Kamuzu Central Hospital for identification.

Currently, Banda (the driver of Mercedes Benz) is in police custody and will appear before the court soon to answer charges of causing death by reckless driving, according to Kwinyani.
