Mangochi gets K1bn Gesd grant

Mangochi district commissioner Raphael Piringu says the district has received K1 billion from the World Bank for various projects.

In an interview, Piringu said the grant follows the council’s good performance in the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) Project in the past financial year.

“We came second, after Lilongwe, in the Local Authority Assessment Performance. This grant will help us implement a project in each constituency,” he said.

The DC cited projects such as bridges, schools, teachers’ houses and health facilities as among those to be implemented.

Piringu: We will implement projects

“We are committed to implement these projects from August 1 2022 to March 31 2023 after full council meeting,” said Piringu.

In an interview, Mangochi Monkey Bay legislator Ralph Jooma (Democratic Progressive Party) said the grant will help to transform the district.

“For us a district to qualify for the funds it means we performed well. I pledge to support the council to implement quality projects by monitoring their progress,” he said.

Senior Chief Makanjira said he looks forward to seeing more projects implemented in his area.

He, however, asked development partners to consider giving Mangochi District Council funds to upgrade the Mangochi-Makanjira Road.
