NGO motivates learners to work hard in school

Focus on Developing Mother Africa (Fodema) has encouraged learners from nine schools in Mulanje, Chiradzulu and Blantyre districts to work hard to achieve their goals.

Speaking on Monday at Mtengo wa Mbalame Primary School in Chileka, Blantyre, Fodema executive director Mark Kampira said they award outstanding learners in primary and secondary schools with learning materials and sugar to motivate them to work hard in class.

He said a survey they conducted in the country in February this year  showed that some children dropout of school because they see no value in education.

“Girls constitute a large number of school dropouts as they opt to get married instead of continuing with their education. So, we decided to take action on what we can do to revive the love for education among children,” said Kampira.

He said they also deliver motivational speeches in schools to motivate learners to stay in school.

Mtengo wa Mbalame Primary School head teacher Kingsley Chimwala commended Fodema for motivating learners to remain in school.

“Motivational speeches are key to learners in rural areas where role models are scarce,” he said.

Fodema has so far awarded 168 outstanding learners from Thuchila, Mombo and Namipingo primary schools in Chiradzulu as well as Chigombe, Malowa, Dziwe and Mtengo wa Mbalame primary schools in Blantyre. The organisation also awarded learners from Nachiwale Community Day Secondary School in Mulanje.

The organisation  was formed in 2019 by students from University of Malawi, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Mzuzu University.
