Communities around Chididi in Senior Chief Malemia’s area in Nsanje District have commended their Area Development Committee for facilitating the construction of a bridge across Masimo River.
In an interview on Tuesday, community member Jessie Moyenda from Masimo Village said the bridge will ease mobility challenges in the area.
“People from Mkhutche, Njazi, Pheredzenge, Kazingizi, Jofilisi and Chimtombwe struggled to cross the river to Chididi Trading Centre during the rainy season,” she said.
Motorcycle taxi operator Pemphero Daniel said he charged between K2 000 and K3 000 to take people to the area.
“But with the construction of the bridge, we can consider lowering the transport cost,” he said.
Daniel also asked authorities to upgrade the road to bitumen standard.
Malemia Area Development Committee chairperson Matthias Chilumba commended M and M Building Contractor for the quality bridge.
He said: “The bridge is equal to the value of K14 million. We monitored the project from the start and where we felt the contractor was not doing better, we engaged them for improvement.
“We thank Malawi Economic Justice Network who trained us to monitor projects Nsanje District Council is implementing.”
