Chichiri Prison Hit By Water Shortage

Information reaching our desk indicate that there is water shortage at Chichiri Prison in Blantyre since Friday last week.

According to Spokesperson for the facility, Duncan Malizani, the situation has exposed inmates to the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and scabies since hygiene is compromised, adding that they are finding it hard to prepare meals for the inmates.

Malizani, however, said Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has been supplying them with water bowsers, “but that is not enough as the facility has over 2, 000 inmates.”

BWB Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Robert Hanjahanja was quick to dismiss report that water problem started on Friday instead, he said the problem started on Monday saying on Saturday, there was power outage that affected water supply in the city but was restored at night.
