Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) has handed over three skip carriers and 10 skip bins worth over K200 million to Nkhata Bay District Council to enhance its sanitation project.

The equipment is part of the K1.75 billion Nkhata Bay Town Water and Sanitation Project the board is implementing in the district to expand water supply and facilitate sanitation in the lakeshore district.

In an interview, NRWB  chairperson James Munthali said under the sanitation component, they want to support Nkhata Bay to improve sanitation in the district.

“We have also prepared Sanitation and Hygiene Planning and Investment Strategy for Nkhata Bay Town and we constructed 23 ventilated improved pit latrines and flush toilets in public schools, markets and health centres,” he said.

Munthali said they have upgraded the liquid waste treatment plant at Nkhata Bay District Hospital to treat liquid waste collected from households and institutions at the town.

Nkhata Bay District Council chairperson Malani Kafunda said they will ensure that the three vehicles are serviced regularly.

The African Development Bank, Opec Fund for International Development and Malawi Government are funding the Water Supply and Sanitation Project implemented by NRWB.
