Minister of Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda has trashed rumours hovering on the social media claiming that Parliament is planning to impeach State Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima in the forthcoming session.
Recently President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera suspended all delegated duties to Chilima after being implicated in corruption scandal involving well-known businessman Zuneth Sattar.
The scandal has resulted in some Malawians calling for the immediate resignation of Chilima to pave way for investigations.
Earlier this week social media was awash with reports that Parliament is planning to impeach Chilima in the forthcoming session.
But leader of the house Richard Chimwendo Banda has quashed the claims.
“The office of the Leader of the House has noted with concern the false rumours circulating in public to the effect that the forthcoming Meeting of Parliament, will, among other things, consider impeaching, the Right Honourable Dr Saulosi Klaus Chilima, State Vice President of the Republic of Malawi.
“I wish to inform the public that, for any business item to be considered by the House it must be examined first by the Business Committee as per our Standing Orders. This includes both Government and Private Members business. The Business Committee met on Wednesday, 29th June, 2022 and I wish to state here, that at no point did the impeachment of the Vice President come up for discussion. No Notice of such Motion, as is required by our Standing Orders has either been lodged let alone discussed by the Business Committee,” said Chimwendo Banda.
He added: “It is my hope that this statement puts matters on these rumours about the business of the House for the forthcoming meeting, to rest. Members of the public may wish to note that the forthcoming Meeting of Parliament will discuss the usual business items such as Ministerial Statements, Questions to Minsters, Members Motions, Bills etc.”
Meanwhile, Chilima is scheduled to address Malawians this coming Friday in Lilongwe.
