Domestic football giants Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have offered to play a charity match on July 6 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
This follows the cancellation of their friendly match on the same day which would have been part of the independence anniversary celebrations.
In a joint letter addressed to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary Alfred Gunda, the two teams state that following the cancellation of the Independence Day match, they approached several organisations, particularly those in charity, if they would consider taking up their costs for the match.

Part of the letter co-signed by Bullets chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda and Wanderers board secretary Humphrey Mvula, reads in part: “Fortunately, Nzika Foundation was approached and has expressed willingness to take up hosting costs and other related expenditures on the understanding that they would generate monies for their support to vulnerable groups.
“We seek your approval to play this friendly match on 6th July, 2022 at Kamuzu Stadium. We would appreciate your favourable response.”
Mvula confirmed the joint request to FAM, saying they were waiting for response.
But FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka yesterday said they were yet to receive the letter.
“I have checked with the GS and it has not reached him yet,” he said.
Chairperson of this year’s Independence Day Celebrations Committee Sam Kawale, who is also Minister of Lands, announced last week that due to the current economic situation, the planned celebrations had been cancelled and, instead, there day will be commemorated by prayers at Bingu International Convention Centre. n
