Malawian netball star Mwawi Kumwenda on Saturday inspired her Australian club Melbourne Vixens to a remarkable 55-54 comeback victory over Giants to secure a Suncorp Super Netball grand final spot.
The gangly shooter converted 36 baskets from 37 attempts as Vixens came from 10 goals down to seal the fairytale triumph.

According to a www.abc.net.au report, Kumwenda and goal-attack Rahni Samason were instrumental in the team’s success.
Reads the report in part: “The Giants outscored the Vixens 21-11 in the second quarter and 19-12 in the third.
“But the relentless accuracy of goal shooter Mwai Kumwenda and goal-attack Rahni Samason ensured the Vixens’ extraordinary comeback.
“Kumwenda scored 36 from 37 shots, and Samason added 13 from 15, plus three super shots, as the hosts shot at 91 percent accuracy for the match.”
The publication further said Vixens trailed by nine goals at the three-quarter-time break, only to outscore the Giants 17-7 in the final term to complete a remarkable comeback.
The semi-final victory means Vixens will meet West Coast Fever in the grand final next week.
In a telephone interview on Sunday, Kumwenda said she was happy to have helped her team secure the grand final slot and she is looking forward to their pursuit for a major premiership.
“The game was very tough, but we fought hard to secure the win. I am happy with the overall performance of the team,” she said.
Kumwenda lies second on the league’s list of players with the most offensive rebounds. She has 43, three behind the leader Jhanele Fowler of Fever. She is also third on the scorers chart with 540 goals. Fowler leads the pack with 804 while Shimona Nelson of Magpies is second on 661.
