Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education Training Authority (Teveta) has urged employers to start prioritising the Malawi Tevet Certificate.
Teveta executive director Elwin Sichiola said this in Lilongwe on Thursday during a business breakfast the authority hosted for industry players to appraise them on Tevet courses, certification and the role of industries.
He said there is need to recognise the Tevet certificate in the vocational educational skills sector.
Sichiola said the Malawi Government in 2017 harmonised three certificates into the Malawi Tevet Certificate.
He said: “It is a local certificate developed within a Malawian scenario. It was developed by experts and it fits within the needs of every employer.
“You should also understand that this is a certificate that was aligned to the Sadc [Southern African Development Community] protocol on transferability of qualifications. It is an internationally recognised qualification.”
Sichiola said Teveta will start scrutinising foreign examining bodies to ensure that they meet local standards and requirements.
Ministry of Labour director of technical and vocational training Aubrey Matemba said they are worried that the industry is not adopting the Malawi Tevet Certificate contrary to expectations.
He said government expects industries to demand the Malawi Tevet Certificate for vocational skills jobs.
Tobacco Commission human resources and office services manager Bright Chipao, speaking on behalf of the business community, said they are now aware of the skills available on the market and priority will go towards recruiting skills trained from Tevet institutions.
He said employers are sometimes reluctant to employ Tevet graduates because their courses are at times generic while some companies require specialists for specific tasks.
