Speeding bus driver kills pedestrian while rushing to Zambia game

A LUSAKA-based bus driver rushing to Heroes Stadium for yesterday’s Africa Cup qualifier game between Zambia and Comoros ended up bashing and killing a pedestrian on Independence Avenue.

The accident happened near Kamwala Bus stop which is in the extreme opposite direction of Heroes Stadium around 17:45 hours.

According to reports, the victim who is yet to be identified died on the spot after sustaining injuries from being hit while pushing a wheelbarrow as he crossed the road.

Police have identified the driver as Evason Banda aged 25 of Mutendere Compound in Lusaka.

According to witnesses, in responding to questions from people on the accident scene who asked him how the accident happened, a shaken Banda said he was rushing to go and cheer the Chipolopolo Boys who were battling Comoros Islands.

Zambia Police Spokesperson Danny Mwale has confirmed the accident and said Banda is in custody for a possible of causing death by dangerous driving.

Mwale says the body has been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary awaiting identification while investigations are ongoing.
