OVER 30 people in Nigeria’s Port Hacourt River State have died following a stampede at one of the new generation churches.
BBC Pidgin reports that the victims where attending the fourth anniversary of The Kings Assembly today, where the church intended to do special charity programme, ‘Shop for free’ to share food, among other items.
And before the church event started, the venue was already full to the brim with some people coming a day before.
As if pulled by a magnet field in one direction, the congregants rushed towards the gate immediately the entrance was opened, thereby causing the stampede.
Rivers State Police Command spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed to BBC pidgin that 32 have lost their lives, following the stampede.
Some dead bodies have since been deposited at a Military mortuary while those injured have been taken to health facilities.
