Relatives of soldiers who died in road accident involving Chakwera’s convoy demand compensations from govt

Spouses to the soldiers who died in a road accident involving a presidential convoy and one surviving soldier have written the Attorney General a notice of intention to sue government for failing to compensate them, almost a year after the two officers died, and several others injured in Blantyre.

Lawyer representing the widows and one injured soldier, Gift Dick Chimowa of Chimowa and Associates says are demanding K34 million for each widow and K12 million kwacha to the injured soldier, Antony Mponda who sustained injuries on both legs.

Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda says is yet to receive the notices.

The accident occurred on June 7, last year, near Blantyre Girls primary when President Lazarus Chakwera was travelling from Lilongwe to Sanjika Palace when a driver of a military cruiser failed to negotiate a curve which led to the vehicle overturning, before plunging into a brick fence of the school.
