Seed Trade Association of Malawi (Stam) general secretary Nessimu Nyama has urged farmers in Mchinji District to use certified maize seeds to realise high yields.

He made the remarks on Wednesday during a field day where farmers appreciate maize varieties from different seed companies.

“The field day seeks to provide farmers with information on why they should use certified seeds and it helps them to analyse how certain varieties perform in their localities,” Nyama said.

Mikundi Extension Planning Area agriculture extension development coordinator Elia Clemence commended Stam for involving about 120 farmers in the research.

He said: “Farmers will make good decisions on which seed to purchase in the next growing season.

“I also thank seed companies for strengthening the security of seed in the current growing season as farmers were able to buy original seed.”

One of the farmers, Agata Siviliano, said she previously used to recycle seed.

“I am amazed with what I have seen. From the 22 varieties that I have seen, I am now certain that next year I will buy certified seeds,” she said.
