Villagers in Mchinji protests against blackout

Concerned residents in Senior Chief Mkanda in Mchinji, today stormed council offices in the district to present their petition over continued electricity blackout, which has for over three months paralysed operations at Mkanda health centre and other surrounding areas.

Spokesperson for the group, Kingsley Matemba, said it is sad to note that pregnant mothers continue to be treated in darkness, and that children requiring vaccination are being referred to Kaigwazanga health centre covering over 20 kilometers.

District Commissioner for Mchinji, Fred Movete, said he will engage Escom officials in the border district to push for a quick intervention on the matter.

Meanwhile, the residents have given concerned parties a seven day ultimatum to rectify the problem, failing which they will take unspecified action.
