Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) says the establishment of the Private Sector Council will help facilitate growth and sustainable development for businesses.

In an interview yesterday, MCCCI president James Chimwaza, while welcoming the formation of the council, was quick to say they will wait to see terms of reference.

He said: “We need to see the terms of reference of the council that is being formed.

“There is public private sector dialogue where we discuss issues, sometimes statements are made on public forums but implementation becomes a challenge.”

Over the years, the private sector has been decrying bureaucracy in government that affects private sector growth.

In a statement, President Lazarus Chakwera last week announced the formation of a Private Sector Council that will directly be interacting with him directly on quarterly basis.

The President said one practical way of rendering private support will be through the intervention of his Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU).

He said: “But the good news is that through my direct interface with the Private Sector Council, we will be able to resolve issues in a collaborative manner and make adjustments as needed, including any helpful adjustments to the land laws that are currently due for consideration by Parliament.”

Minister of Trade and Industry Mark Katsonga Phiri said issues of private sector development remain at the heart of his ministry’s agenda.

He said: “My ministry will continue undertaking institutional, legal and regulatory reforms to reduce costs of doing business in the country.”
