President Lazarus Chakwera has urged Malawians living in the diaspora to invest at home as one way of contributing to the country’s socioeconomic development.
The President made the remarks on Thursday evening when he met Malawians living in New York, USA.
He said: “Malawi is currently facing many challenges which include the Covid-19 pandemic, Tropical Storm Ana and rising prices of goods.
“I, therefore, implore you to take personal responsibility and help to build the country by investing back home.”
Chakwera said the Tonse Alliance administration is working hard to reduce the impact of the challenges on people’s lives.
In his remarks, a representative of Malawians in diaspora professor Yusuf Juwayeyi said they were ready to work with government in developing the country.
Said Juwayeyi: “High fuel prices, Covid-19 and natural disasters are global phenomena even the United States of American has not been spared.
“What is needed is to create an environment that will allow Malawians in the diaspora to know what is happening home so that they are able to identify investment opportunities as well as intervene accordingly where there are challenges.”
Speaking earlier, Minister of Gender Patricia Kaliati hailed Chakwera for taking time to meet Malawians living in the US despite his busy schedule. The President, who was expected back home yesterday, went to the USA to participate in the fifth United Nations Least Development Countries Conference at the UN General Assembly headquarters in New York.
