Vice-President Saulos Chilima has expressed satisfaction with the progress of reforms implemented by Mchinji District Council.
He expressed the sentiments on Wednesday during his ongoing monitoring of Public Sector Reforms implementation in district councils in the country.
Under the reforms, Mchinji District Council is, among others, improving infrastructure in trading centres and constructing fish ponds which are enabling pillars to achieving Malawi 2063 development agenda.
After touring Kawere Fish Ponds Construction Project, the Vice-President said he was impressed.

“Mchinji District Council’s reform area include urbanisation, improving food security and financial sustainability through plans to develop main trading centres in the district.
“We are impressed with their plans to develop Kawere Fish Ponds and trading centre. This is expected to boost fisheries and tourism,” said Chilima.
He said the district has applied for change of status from district to town council, which, he said, comes with infrastructure requirements such as changing the face of the district.
“Across the border in Zambia, we have Chipata which is more developed and the intention of reforms for Mchinji is to develop and accelerate to that level,” said Chilima.
Minister of Local Government Blessings Chinsinga said Mchinji District has potential to grow into a town or city if some of the reform areas are implemented.
In his presentation, Mchinji District director of planning and development Noel Dakamau said the 40 fish ponds being constructed at Kawere are expected to boost tourism and create employment in the district.
“We have also rehabilitated the council’s guest house and truck park as one way of generating revenue for the district,” he said.
