Several Ukrainian Women & Children Feared Dead After Russian Soldiers Bomb Drama Theatre

In what has been condemned by Ukraine as a war crime, Russian soldiers on Wednesday bombed a drama theatre in Mariupol where up to 1,200 Ukrainians, including women and children, were sheltering.

Prior to the bombing, the Daily Mail reports that satellite imagery from Monday showed that there were signs with the word ‘children’ written in large white letters put in front of and behind the theatre building in an apparent effort to ward off any attack by Russian forces.

Regardless of the signs, Russian forces still went on to bomb the theatre two days later.

After the bombing, the central part of the building reportedly collapsed causing debris to block the entrance to the bomb shelter. This resulted in hundreds of people being trapped inside.

At the time of reporting, officials still do not know how many people were killed and injured in the attack.

In a statement, the city council said:

“It’s impossible to estimate the scale of this horrific and inhumane act as the residential areas are still under shelling. “It appears that the main part of the Drama Theatre has been destroyed and that the debris has blocked the entrance to the bomb shelter underneath.”

The bombing at Mariupol drama theatre comes after Russia on March 9 bombed a maternity hospital in Mariupol killing four people, including a pregnant woman whose baby also died after the attack.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky described the despicable bombing at Mariupol maternity hospital as an act of “genocide.”

President Zelensky revealed that women waiting to give birth were wounded during the bombing, while children were buried under the rubble and the debris.
