The inaugural Women’s Football National Championship rolls into action tomorrow with appetising Group A and B fixtures at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre and Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.
Rivals Nyasa Big Bullets Women’s Team, formerly Blantyre Zero and Ntopwa Super Queens will face off in search of full three points in Group A in Blantyre while Central Region champions DD Sunshine will host Blantyre-based Bangwe Super Queens in Group B in Lilongwe.

On Sunday, women’s football action goes up North as Moyale Barracks Sisters host Lilongwe-based giants Skippers in Group A at the Mzuzu Stadium. On the same day, there will be a Group B encounter involving Ascent Academy and Bangwe Super Queens at Civo Stadium.
Nevertheless, National Women Football Association (NWFA) chairperson Suzgo Ngwira yesterday said Kamuzu Stadium is a tentative venue for action in the commercial city as their discussions with the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) on having the encounter as a curtain raiser to a Super League match are not yet finalised.
“Tentatively, the venue is Kamuzu Stadium. We will communicate if there will be some changes after our discussions with Sulom,” she said.
The competing teams yesterday said they are ready for the games.
“We are determined to have a good start in this new competition. As Zero, we are ready for action against our Blantyre rivals this Saturday,” said Zero administrator Gift Nyirenda.
On his part, Ntopwa owner Isaac Jomo Osman said they cannot wait to have a feel of the inaugural national competition.
The K32 million championship, which comprises 2021 season’s top-three teams from each of the three FAM Regional Women’s Football Leagues, is expected to act as a trial for the imminent National Women’s Football League.
The first phase of the championship will see the nine teams being divided into two groups of four and five teams to play round-robin matches. Thereafter, the top two teams from each group will make it into the semi-finals, from which the winners will proceed to the final and the losers to the third-place playoff.
