Water Aid Malawi and The Hunger Project have hailed their Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (Wash) and Nutrition Integration interventions jointly implemented in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwambo in Zomba District for transforming people’s welfare.

The project sought to improve hygiene and nutrition in communities and among under-five children in community-based childcare centres (CBCC).

Speaking on Tuesday at Tigwirizane CBCC during the project’s monitoring, Water Aid Malawi Wash and Nutrition Integration project manager Patrick Mwagomba said the non-governmental  organisations (NGOs) constructed classroom blocks and drilled boreholes in schools.

He also said they engaged people to practice crop diversification.

“Now community members take part in projects such as drilling boreholes and constructing classroom blocks,” said Mwagomba.

The Hunger Project health, nutrition and gender programme officer Grace Takomana said her organisation also promoted nutrition initiatives in the area.

“Our objective was to ensure that children learn under a conducive environment and eat nutritious food,” he said.

Zomba district principal nutrition, HIV and Aids officer  Maggie Chiwaula said the project has addressed malnutrition among under-five children.

“More households now eat six food groups,” she said.

Zomba District early childhood development coordinator Jane Majawa said the project has increased children’s enrolment in CBCCs.

Speaking on behalf of communities, village head Khuvinda said the project has improved sanitation in the area.

With funding from the Postcode Lottery of  Sweden, Water Aid, in conjunction with The Hunger Project, embarked on the three-year project from April 2019 which is expected to phase out on March 31 2022.
