Mchinji Police Station officer-in-charge Rhoda Manjolo has bemoaned the rise in suicide cases in the district.
She expressed the sentiments on Wednesday during a Station Executive Committee meeting with community policing forums.
Manjolo: People should seek counseling
Manjolo said although criminal cases declined in 2021 compared to 2020, suicide cases increased.
She said: “In 2021, the district registered 995 criminal cases compared to 1 220 in 2020.
“However, in 2021 we recorded nine suicide cases compared to six in 2020.”
Manjolo asked the forums to encourage people to seek counselling from others when they face challenges.
“People should open up to others instead of taking their own lives,” she said.
Mchinji Police Station executive committee community policing chairperson Grant Khola said the forums were instrumental in fighting crime in 2021.
“We urge the forums to also work hard this year to reduce suicide and mob justice,” he said.
Zulu Community Policing Forum chairperson Lawrence Mwanza said they will engage people to stop taking the law into their own hands.
The review meeting discussed the challenges the station faced last year and how community policing forums can work with the police to fight and prevent crime in the district.
