The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) has condemned Lilongwe District Council for cancelling anti-corruption demonstrators which some ‘concerned’ Malawians were slated to lead tomorrow.
The council had initially granted the ‘concerned’ Malawians permission to go ahead with their protests before u-turning yesterday.
CHRR Executive Director Michael Kaiyatsa said authorities must always remember that freedom of assembly is guaranteed in the Constitution.
Kaiyatsa has further reminded authorities that the Police Act, which regulates assemblies in Malawi, does not require organisers of demonstrations to obtain permission to conduct their marches.
