A 7- year-old girl has drowned in Mtupi River in the area of Senior Chief Kanyenda in Nkhotakota district.

Public Relations Officer for Nkhunga Police Station, Andrew Kamanga, has confirmed the death and identified the girl as Christina Ndafera

According to Kamanga, the incident occurred as the girl was swimming adding that her body was discovered yesterday.

He says the girl fell into deep water side where her friends failed to rescue her.

The police station spokesperson says results of a postmortem indicate that death was due to suffocation.
